Stellar King George Field Adds More Contenders

The field for Saturday’s £1 million King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot is heating up with the addition of two horses.

Eagle Top will join stablemate Taghrooda after the colt’s connections coughed up the £75,000 supplementary fee on Monday. This will be the four year-olds fourth start, but definitely the most significant. Lady Bramford’s King Edward VII winner at Royal Ascot was given odds of 7-1 when entered to the market at Bet365 Bet365. His stablemate meanwhile is second favourite to take out Britain’s premier all-age middle-distance race at 5-2.

Meanwhile, Hamdan Al Maktoum is playing both aces up his sleeve, keeping Eclipse winner Mukhadram in the race alongside his other entry, Taghrooda. The season’s leading owner is very keen to add the King George VI to his already stellar year.

Epsom Oaks winner Taghrooda was committed last Thursday after being withdrawn from the Irish Oaks to prepare. She will bid to become the first three-year-old filly to win the mile-and-a-half event since Pawneese in 1976 and end her season (and possibly career) on a high.

Mukhadram on the other hand will be racing into the unknown should he remain in the contest, as the five year-old 8-1 shot has yet to run beyond a mile and a quarter. His trainer William Haggas said: “I’m expecting Mukhadram to run in the King George, I haven’t heard any different and he’s been in good form at home since Sandown.”

Angus Gold, racing manager to Sheikh Hamdan, issued an upbeat bulletin on Taghrooda and Mukhadram on Monday morning:”Everything has gone well with Taghrooda. She’s been working well, looks fantastic and is very happy mentally.

“John Gosden said if she is going to retire at the end of the season, she’s not going to have many more races so why not have a go at a big one with her? Sheikh Hamdan felt he’d be adventurous and have a go at the big one.”

Regarding Mukhadram, Gold told At The Races: “William Haggas always felt he would stay and his pedigree suggests he will stay.

“I haven’t had the chance to speak to Sheikh Hamdan about it. I’m going to wait until later in the week and see how both horses are, give Sheikh Hamdan that news and let him make up his mind what he wants to do. It will be hard for Paul Hanagan to get of an unbeaten Classic winner [Taghrooda].”

Telescope, who soared to the head of the ante-post King George market after a stunning victory in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, is the market favourite at 2-1.

King George bet365 bet: Telescope 2-1, Taghrooda 5-2, Magician 5-1, Eagle Top 7, Mukhadram 8, Trading Leather 10, Flintshire 12, Noble Mission 16, Romsdal 20, Brown Panther 33, Hall Of Mirrors 66, Leitir Mor 100.
